On September 14th 2016, Bread for the World Consultant Reverend Gary Cook and Bread of the World Deputy Director for Church Relations, Nancy Neal, led a group of volunteers to the presidential campaign headquarters of Hillary Clinton in Brooklyn, NY and to the presidential campaign headquarters of Donald Trump in Manhattan, NY (1) to deliver petitions signed by 600,000 American citizens to promote the inclusion and prioritization of hunger and poverty public policy issues in the upcoming presidential debates and (2) to inform the campaigns about these issues and impress upon them the urgent need for real policy action to end hunger and poverty. The petitions were delivered on USB drives and boxes symbolizing the petitions were used to reiterate key facts about hunger. At the Clinton headquarters, Bread for the World advocates were joined by Robb Friedlander, Advocacy Manager at Feeding America, and delivered the petitions to Jared Mueller, Chief of Staff for Hillary Clinton's political team. At the Trump headquarters, Bread for the World advocates delivered the petitions to Alan Cobb, National Director of Coalitions for Donald Trump’s Presidential Campaign. The Bread for the World advocates were joined by Deborah Grunbaum, Senior Director of Communications for WhyHunger, when they attempted to deliver the petitions to presidential debate moderator Lester Holt at NBC's offices in Rockefeller Center.
